A lot of renovation work is coming to Rockville Centre.

The village board of trustees approved nearly $2.4 million of bids for road work and street lighting at its meeting on May 9. Included is $1.8 million to Richard Grimm for Phase I of the 2016 Road Program.

The 2016 road program, which is paid for through bonds, includes work on the water mains, curbs, asphalt and street lighting for 3.11 miles of road. “The Road Programs does not have a definite timeline,” Julie Scully, village spokeswoman, wrote in an email. “The first phase has been board approved. Contracting is going on now. It would be great if it started June and it will probably last until late September. Phase II hasn’t been bid yet. When it starts and how long it takes completely depends on the availability of the contractor.”

Each road is expected to take between three and five months to be completed.

Another big road project is South Park Avenue. The village will redo the sidewalk, curbing, lighting and streetscapes of the road from Lincoln Avenue to Merrick Road. This also includes repaving part of Municipal Lot No. 4, which is behind the Sandel Senior Center. According to Scully, the road will still be useable during the construction work, which is expected to start soon and be done by the winter.

Since South Park Avenue is a county road, Nassau County will have to come repave the road at a later date, which has not been set.

Roadwork Ahead will do this work for $381,100, which will be paid by the village’s Community Block Development Grant.

The village is also replacing older lights in on streets that have had problems, which were originally included in Phase II of the road program. “There are two sets of streets where we have been having problems with the lighting,” said Phil Andreas, electric department superintendent. “Some of it is this 1950s vintage lighting. And because of the issues and the problems and the complaints we wanted to accelerate it.”

Frank Robustello & Son, Inc. will do this work for $198,407.

In addition, work on Village Hall should be done next month. The outside is being painted and a portico was built to protect the elevator from snow.
