Opening day at Terence Leary Field

On Friday, July 10 more than 100 people, many from Rockville Centre, turned out for the opening day and dedication of the new baseball field at the Children’s Learning Center (CLC) at the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. The Terence Leary Foundation provided the funding for this new field that will be used by children with developmental disabilities at the CLC. The field is located within the 15 acre property in Roosevelt as part of the fully adapted playground. The field is named for Terence Leary, who grew up in Rockville Centre and passed away in 2003.

Terence had a great love for the game of baseball and the field is a fitting tribute. Hundreds of children will learn the sport and enjoy it for years to come. Children who use wheelchairs will be able to play on this special field. The foundation also donated funds to purchase two UPSEES, a mobility device that allows children who usually require a wheelchair to stand and walk and in the case of the field, run and bat! Last year the Foundation provided funding to the Challenger League of RVC Little League.

The ribbon to open the field was officially cut by Marian Leary with many of the other honored guests assisting. Then Dylan Leary threw out the first pitch with help from a CLC student and the ball was caught at home plate by some members of RVC Little League who had come as volunteers to help at the event. RVC Little League President Tom Bucaria was in attendance along with five past presidents of the league.
