Possible LIRR delays for Monday morning commute

winter weather advisory issued for Nassau County

Currently, the Montauk, Babylon and Port Jefferson branches are experiencing some delayed service on Monday, Feb. 8 for the early morning commute. There are also scattered delays to and from Brooklyn's Atlantic City Terminal.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory up until 6 p.m. for Long Island. Nassau County could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, while Suffolk County could get 4 to 8 inches. The Long Island Rail Road and its customers may suffer minor delays on other branches during the morning rush hour and should give themselves extra time getting to the stations.

“It could be more treacherous driving to the station and walking, than the train ride itself,” LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena said. “Our crews are out early this morning clearing the stations and we haven’t had any serious difficulties. We just want to play it safe with speed.”

Parking at the stations may prove to be difficult and due to low visibility, moderate snowfall and winds 10-20 mph, customers are advised to drive slowly and cautiously.

“They were also out last night salting,” Arena said. “As far as parking lots, we do try to plow some but most are handled by the town or the village jurisdictions. It’s not a great day for traveling but I don’t see any difficulties on the p.m. commute. We are in pretty good shape today to provide near normal service.”

The MTA is advising customers, if at all possible, to remain home and avoid morning travel.
