Fair RVC woman guilty in death of friend
Asya Ulmer, 23, convicted in 2013 DWI manslaughter on N. Centre Ave.
Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Nassau jury found a Rockville Centre woman guilty of the drunk driving manslaughter of Jennifer Alexis in September 2013.
Asya Ulmer, 23, of Rockville Centre, was found guilty on Aug. 12 by a jury of manslaughter in the second degree (a C felony), vehicular manslaughter in the second degree (a D felony), driving while intoxicated (an unclassified misdemeanor ) and driving while in an intoxicated condition (an unclassified misdemeanor).
The jury found the defendant guilty after less than a day of deliberations at the end of a trial that lasted approximately four weeks. Ulmer faces a maximum sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison on the top charge. The case is due back in court on Sept. 15 for post-trial motions and a sentencing date has not been scheduled yet.
“There are no winners in a case like this,” Singas said. “It is tragic that Asya Ulmer got drunk, drove, crashed and killed her best friend that night. We must be clear though: there is only one victim in this case and that is 21-year-old Jennifer Kristen Alexis, who had her life stolen by her friend who took responsibility when she took the wheel.”
Singas said on Sept. 15, 2013, at approximately 5:50 a.m., Ulmer was driving on North Centre Avenue in Rockville Centre with passenger Jennifer Alexis in the car when she drove directly into a tractor trailer that was parked on the right shoulder. The collision was captured on surveillance video from a nearby store. The collision sheered the roof off the car and Alexis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ulmer and Alexis had gone by train to a club in New York City at approximately 12:30 a.m. from Rockville Centre. They returned after 5 a.m., when Ulmer walked by a cab stand before getting into her car with the victim to drive three miles to her home.
Assistant District Attorneys Gene Kang and Christopher Casa of Acting DA Singas’ Vehicular Crimes Bureau are prosecuting the case. Ulmer is represented by Frederick Brewington, Esq.
