In a race for the Town of Hempstead’s 6th Council District seat, the Herald endorses Republican incumbent Gary Hudes.

Hudes, of Levittown, was elected in 2000, and has worked tirelessly to respond to the needs of his constituents. He says he believes in a hands-on approach to government, personally visiting residents to answer their complaints rather than talking on the phone. It’s an approach we have witnessed, and which we greatly admire.

Hudes’s Democratic challenger, Diane Madden, from East Meadow, has spent the majority of the last decade advocating for animal rights. Her efforts have led to reforms in the town animal shelter, a facility that has been the target of withering criticism in the past. Madden’s ideas include more transparency in town government and a strict review of its finances. We admire her efforts and dedication, but we don’t believe that means she could handle all of the responsibilities that are required of town council members.

Hudes has a very sharp business mind, and we believe that’s exactly what the district needs right now. He has already overseen successful downtown revitalizations in North Bellmore and Levittown, is a dedicated advocate of recycling and spends countless hours in schools, inviting students to get involved in local government.

Hudes says he got into politics because he loves helping people, and that he enjoys being “at the bottom of the totem pole,” where he can spend more time speaking directly with his constituents. We believe him, and that’s why he has earned our enthusiastic endorsement.

Sharp business mind. Under his leadership TOWN TAXES went up 44.9%, from $182.528 mil to $264.490 mil. I wonder how bad it would be if he didn't have such a SHARP business mind.
