Put cameras where they’re needed

To the Editor:

It’s been 18 years since my wife and son were nearly killed when a speeding car blew through the red light on Long Beach Road at Greystone Road. But it seems to me that not a month goes by when I don’t hear the sirens of police and ambulances heading to Long Beach Road at Seaman Avenue, Lakeview Avenue or Greystone as yet another speeding motorist causes a reckless accident.

If there was ever a location  for a  camera-monitored 20 mph speed limit marked with the now-familiar flashing lights that show your speed and red-light speed cameras, it’s Long Beach Road, from Raymond Road through Greystone Road. Our children are at much greater risk at these intersections than they ever are near their schools.

It is well known to any longtime Rockville Centre resident that motorists speed through these and traffic lights.

I encourage the Herald to research the accident history of these dangerous intersections, perhaps spending a few hours observing traffic and interviewing pedestrians who park on Long Beach Road and try to get out of their parked cars as people speed by at 40 mph. I am quite sure the research will show this location to be a much more dangerous area than any of our school zones.

This strip of Long Beach Road would be a much more important area for speed cameras for our safety than the recent placement at Hewitt school. It would also likely be a much more profitable location for a speed camera setup.

The next time you see or hear about another accident along Long Beach Road, think about how effective some enforcement could be in really making our children, and us, safer.

If the county isn’t interested in the increased safety, maybe they would be interested in the revenue stream. After all, when was the last time you saw anyone driving the speed limit on Long Beach Road?

Race needs to accommodate residents better

To the Editor:

I have lived in Rockville Centre for only a few years. Twice already, I have had the misfortune of leaving my house off Harvard Avenue on the morning of the 10K, 5K and Family Fun Run and not being able to return for hours due to road closures.
