Rockville Centre Letters to the Editor

Fed up with plowing

To the Editor:

I guess we’re still in the middle of the blizzard of ’15 and most people are home — as our powers in government suggested — trying to dig out. As it does in most snowstorms, the Village of Rockville Centre has completely ignored apartment dwellers.

I know it’s important to clear main roads. I work for a company where I will lose a day’s pay because I didn’t go in, but I did follow the rules. I parked in a municipal lot — No. 20, next to RiteAid. Most cars have been off the roads, and not one lot was done so that we would have somewhere to move our cars if we could get them out after being plowed in. After shoveling for close to an hour — not an easy task — I got the car out and went looking for a legal spot where I might park it safely. Not one lot was cleared at 9:30 a.m. After driving around for 40 minutes, I went back to my original spot and backed in.

We all talk about shoppers having parking, but it’s also important for residents who pay almost $500 yearly for the privilege. We are a wonderful community, but so is Brooklyn. But I won’t live there because I can’t park there! Let’s think about apartment dwellers in the future and plan to clear one lot — maybe the one behind Greek Town — so that residents have a place free of snow to park.

While I’m on the bandwagon, let’s also make sure that homeowners shovel. I’m a walker, and both the village and some residents ignore the snow on their sidewalks. Last year, homeowners and store fronts throughout RVC, Baldwin, East Rockaway and Lynbrook didn’t shovel. If you want to know the culprits, walk down Sunrise, Merrick, Ocean and many side streets and it’s obvious.
