Last week, State Senator Dean Skelos and Assemblyman Brian Curran announced that they had secured nearly $35,000 for the Rockville Centre Public Library.

The funding was part of more than $235,000 that was divided among libraries in the 21st Assembly District, which Curran represents. The library construction grants were approved in the 2013 state budget as part of a $14 million capital fund appropriation that would enable libraries to renovate, replace, and rehabilitate facilities.

“Libraries are such a great tool to our communities, and because they are experiencing dramatic increases in use, building them into a more efficient community resource is essential to meet the public’s demand for computer workspace as well as for research and/or recreational reading,” Curran said in a release. “It’s vital that we keep them up-to-date and I am proud to be able to help,” concluded Curran.”

“Libraries are a very important part of our communities and making these capital investments will ensure that they remain safe and accessible to everyone that depends on them for research, education, entertainment and community gatherings,” Skelos said. “I was proud to work with my colleagues to secure this vital state funding.”

The Rockville Centre library will be receiving $34,900 to renovate the front doors, replacing them with automatic doors to make the building more accessible.

“The Library is extremely grateful for the support of Senator Skelos and Assemblyman Curran in obtaining funding for the much-needed automatic doors at our front entrance,” said Library Director Catherine Overton. “Accessible doors welcome everyone and patrons have expressed their appreciation for this convenience.”
