Holiday Celebrations

Rockville Centre will hold its annual Holiday Tree lighting at the Village Green on Thursday Dec. 6 at 7:30. The annual menorah lighting will be held at Central Synagogue on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.

Leggz Ltd. Dance to perform Nutcracker ballet

Leggz Ltd. Dance and the Rockville Centre Guild For The Arts is preparing to perform a full-length production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker from Dec. 7 to 9. The ballet is the only full-length Nutcracker on Long Island and will feature live music from the 70-piece, South Shore Symphony Orchestra. Performing as the Sugar Plum Fairy is Rockville Centre resident Kathleen Breen Combes, who is a principal dancer with the Boston ballet. The production will also feature principal dancers from the Washington Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, Suzanne Farrell, Mark Morris, New York City Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Alvin Ailey, SanFrancisco Ballet, Carolina Ballet, Morphoses, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Broadway's Movin’ Out and Jerome Robbins Broadway. This Nutcracker will also feature more than 100 young dancers from the greater metropolitan area.

The performances will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m. Tickets for the Nutcracker are $24 and $22 for those over 65 or under 12. Performances will be held at the South Side High School, 140 Shepherd Street, Rockville Centre. Those interested may call (516) 766-7171 for more information.

Presentation on diabetes

Mercy Medical Center will hold a free lecture on living with diabetes during the holiday season at the Bellmore Memorial Library on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. The presentation will be given by Dr. Michael Moskowitz of Bellmore Family Practice. The Bellmore Library is located at 2288 Bedford Avenue. For more information, call the library at (516) 785-2990.

Nassau Women's Club to put on "Songs of Christmas" performance

On Wednesday, Dec. 12 at noon, the club will meet at the United Church, located at 430 Morris Ave. The chorus will entertain with Christmas songs and wine and cheese will be served. A monetary food drive will be conducted for the needy.

SSMS presents STEAM Lab

On Friday, Dec. 14, from 1:20 to 2 p.m., South Side Middle School will hold a ribbon cutting to present its new Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math Laboratory. The STEAM lab was paid for in party by a grant from the RVC Education Foundation. The ribbon cutting will be located at room 114 in the school.

United Church holds pageant

On Sunday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m., the United Church will hold its White Gift Pageant, which consists of carol singing, the Christmas Story dramatized by members in full costume and the offering of gifts. The Board of Missions will be working with The INN, and among the items needed are toys, children's books, clothing for teenagers and children, and gift certificates for teenagers. Tree of Life Yoga

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave., is again sponsoring a Fall session, with evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels. The Tree of Life Yoga will be offering a series of 12 classes, that began on Sept. 13, at 6:30 p.m. — a new day and time. You may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Phillips House Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre

28 Hempstead Avenue is open, free to the public, on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and by appointment by calling: 764-7459. The museum, a sea captain's house built in 1886, has period furnishings. Permanent displays include kitchen tools, wood-working tools, toys, dolls and period glassware. The trustees are always interested in exhibiting collections of local residents. If you have one you would like to share with the community on a temporary basis, please call the above number.

Display Cases

Rockville Centre Homemakers

Craft items created by members of the Homemakers Council of Nassau County Rockville Centre Chapter will be featured in the display cases of the Rockville Centre Public Library throughout the month of November. Homemakers is a non-profit community service organization. Members learn and teach crafts, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking and nutrition. Born in Lima, Peru, Flora Allen arrived in the United States more than thirty years ago to pursue a better life for herself and her two daughters. Always artistically inclined Flora’s true potential is now being realized following her enrollment seven years ago in her first formal art class. She has not stopped painting since, and continues to explore all mediums from oils to watercolors and acrylics. Her work is known for its excellence in landscape composition and for vibrant use of color. Flora has displayed her paintings in libraries and community centers across Long Island. She is a proud member of a

number of local art clubs.

Helen Kraus and Small Community Room Galleries National League of American Pen Women

The artistic efforts of members of the National League of American Pen Women will be displayed in our Lower Galleries throughout the month of November. Artists have used a variety of materials, styles and media. The National League of American Pen Women is an organization of professional women artists, writers, composers, photographers and lecturers. National headquarters is in the League owned Pen-Arts Building in Washington D.C. There are more than 6000 members divided among the 220 branches throughout the United States, with 40 members belonging to the Long Island Branch. NLAPW’s purposes and objectives are to conduct and promote literacy, to provide educational and charitable activities in the fields of Arts, Letters and Music, and to encourage the production of creative work in these fields. Operation Christmas Child

The Rec Center is collecting school supplies, toiletries and small games for distribution to needy children. Bring your donations, in their original packaging, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by early November.

Open Gym Program

The main gymnasium of the Rec Center will be open for free play basketball for grades 4 and up on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 29. The evening open gym for grades 6 and up will begin Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 from 7:30 to 10:15 p.m. Admission is by valid 2012-2013 Recreation Card.

The music students from the South Side Middle School will perform holiday and seasonal music at the Sandel Senior Center on Dec. 18 at 11 a.m.
