Friends of Mercy pledge $250K for hospice unit

Mercy Medical Center and Good Shepherd Hospice, both a part of Catholic Health Services, are working together to ensure that Nassau County residents have access to quality inpatient hospice services. The Certificate of Need application for a 12-bed hospice unit at Mercy was approved by the New York State Department of Health, and the unit is expected to open this year.

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center kicked off the capital campaign for Good Shepherd Hospice at Mercy Medical Center with a pledge of $250,000. The unit’s family lounge will be named the Friends of Mercy Family Lounge.

Mercy operated a hospice unit until the late 1980s. Since its closure, residents have had to travel for these services. Like Good Shepherd’s inpatient hospice unit on the St. Charles campus in Port Jefferson, the new facility will accommodate terminally ill patients who require an acute level of care.
