Long Island runners brave cold for RVC race

On one of the coldest mornings so far this fall, Rockville Centre runners braved the chilly 26-degree temperature to participate in a village tradition.

Hundreds of runners came out for the event last Saturday, which offered locals the choice of embarking on a 10-kilometer, 5-kilometer or one-mile run. The Rockville Centre Recreation Department and the Chamber of Commerce sponsored the longtime race, and a portion of the proceeds benefitted the RVC Breast Cancer Coalition.

Colin Culhane, 27, of Sayville, earned first place in the 10K, finishing in 33 minutes and 46 seconds, and Old Bethpage’s Lena Edelstein was the first woman to finish, completing the course in 41:11. Old Westbury’s Paul Markovina, 17, and Plainview’s Melanie Fiume, 23, finished first in the male and female categories for the 5K, completing it in 16:05 and 19:56, respectively.
