South Side Middle School drama students lit up the stage like a flame with its rendition of “Fame Jr.” from May 5-6.

The show was based off the 1980 hit motion picture and 1982 television series. All of the scenes brought high energy and catchy music [including the hit title song], in addition to a moving coming-of-age story.

Set in the early 1980’s, “Fame Jr.” follows a diverse class of students through four years of school at New York City’s acclaimed Performing Arts High School. Each young artist works on finding themselves and honing their craft while trying to keep up with the strict academic and artistic standards set forth by the school. The story includes humorous, heartbreaking, and relatable moments as it highlights many scenarios that young people, especially young performers, experience in their lives.

“This show beautifully illustrates some of the things young performers experience during the many hours they dedicate to their craft, while at the same time balancing school and a social life,” said director and drama teacher Michelle Yeates.

Starring in the play were students Lila Naccari (Miss Esther Sherman), Racquel Benjamin (Ms. Greta Bell), Devin Mullen (Mr. Myers), Jason Petersen (Mr. Sheinkopf), Reid Plonsky (Nick Piazza), Madeline Roberti (Serena Katz), Dameon Benjamin (Jose Vegas), Jaiden Wettstein (Tyrone Jackson), Arianna Alamo (Carmen Diaz), Gabrielle Fine (Iris Kelly), Alayna Garcia (Mabel Washington), Caleb Taran (Schlomo Metzenbaum), Mary Kelleher (Lambchops Lamb) and Kyle Frucchione (Goody King).

The show was produced by Director of the Arts Dr. Brian Zuar and Stephanie Xanthus and stage managed by Naccari and fellow student Jordan O’Callaghan. Nicholas Pandolfo was the assistant director and sound operator.
