School was out last week, but a handful of local students chose not to stop discovering. The Rockville Centre Public Library hosted a night of winter science fun on Feb. 21, during which attendees created ghost slime and a sunset in a jar.
The sunset experiment, led by Margaret Capobianco, taught the children in attendance about how light scatters in the atmosphere, and how pollution and dust particles change the color of the sunset.
Milk was added to the water in the jar to simulate dust particles in the atmosphere, giving the liquid a yellowish tint. When lit up with a flashlight, the contents of the jar appeared blue.
The youngsters also made glow-in-the-dark slime, which turned sticky and gooey as the ingredients were mixed. Each child was given a jar of slime to take home.
