A 40-year-old woman was struck by a sports utility vehicle and critically injured in Island Park on Saturday night, Nassau County police said.

The woman — who was not identified by police — was transported to a local hospital and suffered a fractured skull, internal bleeding and a broken femur. Police said she is currently in a coma.

The woman was attempting to cross Austin Boulevard at around 11 p.m. when a 2009 Toyota RAV4 traveling northbound struck her.

The driver of the SUV, a male 47-year-old, stopped at the scene and rendered aid to the victim, police said.

A vehicle safety inspection was conducted at the scene, according to police, and the investigation is ongoing.
