The North Shore boys’ track and field team finished this spring season with a visit to the county championship meet, capping its season off with a tie for first place at the Class A title. With a multitude of candidates vying for high positioning event to event, the Vikings made their presence felt sharing the gold with Valley Stream North, finishing 35 points ahead of the nearest competitor and a mile away from the 18 other teams at the meet.

In the first event of the day, the 3000 meter steeplechase kicked off the festivities with a major showing from North Shore. Sophomore Jack Rosencrans and junior Nick Lacomba finished first and third, respectively. This grabbed 16 early points for the Vikings, and they weren't to be stopped just yet.

In the 1600 meter run finals, senior Dylan Welch nabbed second place, finishing just four seconds behind the first place winner. Those 8 points was of extreme importance due to VSN, ever looming, having two runners place in first and fifth.

In the 400 meter dash finals, Elia Alberts finished just over a second shy of first place, securing 8 more points for the Vikings in their quest for the county championship. However, in the next event, VSN had 3 athletes finish within the top 4, collecting the points at a premium.

Alberts made a well-needed return to the scorebook, though, coming in second in the pole vault earning himself and his team another 8 points.

Then, just as North Shore was looking for a return towards the top of the scoreboard, Welch and senior Justin Rivera collaborated for an 18 point effort, finishing first and second respectively in the 800 meter run. Rosencrans then collected another 8 points in the 3200 meter run, however VS North had nabbed 13 by having three individuals place in the event.

With a back and forth battle brewing and nearing it’s tipping point, Alberts reappeared on the scene with a solid fourth place finish earning 4 points in the 200 meter dash, followed by a key 2nd place finish in the 4x800 relay, consisting of a strong team of Lacomba and fellow juniors Collin O’Sullivan, Oscar Varela, and Ethan Loring. The very next event was the 4x400 relay, in which North Shore again finished second. This time, Welch and Rivera were placed alongside sophomore James Vizza and junior William Drexel.

Senior Jacob Daly placed fifth in the shotput finals, earning another few points. With one event to go, North Shore sat at 90 points, with VS North chomping at their heels with an all-too-close 88. In the last event, the boys high jump finals, Rosencrans just couldn't soar as high VS North senior Tyler John, giving the two schools an equal 98 points and a split of the gold medal.

However, this was nothing to hang their heads over, as North Shore culminated a great and successful season with a peak performance under head coach Ed Corona.
