Denenberg case adjourned; attorneys say plea deal is in the works

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, the Merrick Democrat accused by his former employer of overbilling a large corporate client for millions of dollars, was expected to plead guilty to mail fraud charges in federal court in Central Islip on Dec. 11, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York. Port Ambrose impact report expected

A company’s plans to build “Port Ambrose,” a liquefied natural gas terminal in the Atlantic Ocean 19 miles southeast of Jones Beach, have stalled for months in a federal review process, but that is likely to change next month. A U.S. Coast Guard official estimated that the government will release a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Port Ambrose in December. more

Abrahams, Legislature’s top Dem, running for Congress

It is official: Kevan Abrahams, the Freeport Democrat who leads his party’s caucus in the Nassau County Legislature, is running for Congress. Abrahams began testing the waters in the 4th Congressional District race earlier this year, including registering a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 24 and holding a campaign fundraiser five days later at the Carltun in Eisenhower Park. But it was not until last Wednesday that Abrahams publicly acknowledged that he is running, telling reporters before then that he was in “exploratory mode.” more

County runs warming centers, hotline, shelter during snowstorm

As a major snowstorm bore down on the Northeast on Tuesday, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced that the county had activated a special hotline for non-life-threatening emergencies and opened 19 “warming centers” around the county for residents. The county’s emergency shelter relief program for homeless individuals and families, “WARMBED,” also remains in place overnight as usual. more
