American Legion Honors Local Heroes

American Legion Post 1132 in Seaford held is annual Law and Order Night on May 20 at its hall on Penatiquit Avenue.

The event was an opportunity to honor local police officers and firefighters. From Nassau County Police Department’s 7th Precinct, located in Seaford, the honorees were officers Christian Schuh and James Cooper who, while working routine patrol, received a call about a 27-year-old male who overdosed in Seaford. Upon arrival, they found the man was not breathing and administered Narcan, a heroin overdose antidote. The victim began breathing and regained consciousness, and was taken to a local hospital.

On May 23, 2014, Seaford firemedic Thomas Bremen went to a call on Seaman’s Neck Road. He and his crew were faced with a 54-year-old female patient with severe chest pain. They put her in an ambulance and were transporting to her to Winthrop University Hospital for treatment when she went into cardiac arrest. Bremen started CPR while AMT Thomas Mastakouris defibrillated the patient and successfully put her heart back into rhythm. They were then redirected to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Christian Gadowski received the Keith P. Kern Member of the Year Award for a Seaford firefighter or medic for their service the community. Gadowski, now retired from the Air National Guard, worked on the World Trade Center pile for two days after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and has served six tours of duty abroad or overseas. He has been in the Seaford Fire Department since 2009.
