Another year, another successful blood drive

Posted

The Seaford Lions Club has helped to save hundred of lives as it held its annual blood drive last Saturday at the high school.

The Lions Club, in partnership with Long Island Blood Services, collected 158 pints of blood during the seven-hour drive. Each pint can save up to three people, meaning the organization potentially helped more than 450 people. The blood drive has been held for more than 20 years and Seaford consistently has one of the largest single-day collections on Long Island each year.

Donald Paulson, past president of the Lions Club and organizer of this year’s event, said the goal was to collect 145 pints. “We had a good day,” he said. “We were over our goal so we’re happy about that.”

Also supporting the event were the Seaford Harbor and Manor PTAs, and St. William the Abbot School, making a true community blood drive, Paulson explained.

The drive was held in memory of Barbara McDonald, who died last year and had an extensive volunteer record in the community with the PTA, St. William, the Scouts, the Seaford Public Library and other organizations. McDonald was also a blood donor for many years and later helped out with the community blood drive.

A poster contest was also held, in which local students were asked to draw pictures and write messages about the importance of giving blood. The winning posters from students in the three elementary schools were on display throughout the event.
