Bus proposition on Seaford ballot

Posted

The Seaford Board of Education will place a second proposition on the May 19 ballot that will revise the transportation guidelines for Kindergarten students in order to keep them in line with guidelines for students in grades 1-5.

Presently, all kindergarten students are entitled to busing. If Proposition Two passes, kindergartens that live less than .75 miles from school will no longer be eligible for a bus. “This is a bus crowding issue,” said Brian Conboy, superintendent of schools. “This is not a money issue; there is really very little savings to us over the long term.”

In other news, it was reported that New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York state Legislature announced a budget agreement that includes a school aid package of $23.5 billion, an increase of $1.6 billion statewide.

At press time, Monday, March 30, it was not yet known how much each individual school district would receive from the state. “We don’t have our state runs yet,” Conboy said. “But this is good news. Once we see that number we can determine how to use that additional revenue in Seaford.”

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education is scheduled for Thursday, April 16 at which time the board will discuss the revenue portion of its 2015-16 proposed budget. They will also vote on the proposed budget that will be presented to the public on the May 19 ballot.
