MacArthur girls' bowling strikes again

The MacArthur High School varsity girls’ bowling team from Levittown ended its season on a high note, with an overall 11-1 record and a county championship. The team also finished second in the county for a second consecutive year.

“The four of them bowl consistently well,” coach Chris Leahy said of his starters.

The team was led by senior and captain Rose-Marie Snyder, who finished the season with a 189 average and earned All-County honors for the fourth year in a row. “My favorite part of bowling is just being on a team,” she said. “For me, this sport is relaxing and if I’m stressed out, I can just go to the bowling alley and let it out. We have become so close over the past few years and created such a bond.”

Junior Amanda DeLisi finished out the season with a 180 average and sophomore Amanda Petrillo had a 179 average. Both girls earned All-County honors for the second year in a row.

“The season is always stressful and you never know if you are going to do well one day and not so great the next,” DeLisi said. “Making it to counties and doing very well, especially as a team, was the best part.”

DeLisi finished as one of the county’s top six bowlers out of 40 and went on to the All-State Tournament held in Buffalo on March 5. “We have built up such a great morale this year and always try to support each other,” the second captain added. “I’m hope we make counties again next year and make states as a team.”

After another All-County girl graduated last year, Skye Mollica, who was the fifth bowler, moved up “and did a great job at filling those shoes,” Leahy said.

The team’s lone conference loss came at the hands of neighborhood rival Wantagh. Although the Generals lost to Bethpage in the county championships, the four girls wouldn’t change a thing about the season and are proud of their accomplishments as a whole.

“To have success the way our bowling team exhibited this season is just remarkable,” Principal Joseph Sheehan said. “I am so proud of our team and so proud of Coach Leahy, who puts his blood, sweat and tears into the program.
