Pedestrian struck in Wantagh dies

A pedestrian who was struck by a car while crossing Seamans Neck Road on Wednesday morning, succumbed to his injuries later in the day.

The accident occurred at 10:19 a.m., according to Nassau County Police, across from the Wantagh Senior Center. According to police, a 72-year-old man was driving a 2013 Hyundai south on Seaman’s Neck Road and struck an 85-year-old male that was crossing the street.

The pedestrian suffered compound fractures to both legs and severe head trauma. He was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center. The man's name was not released.

No criminal charges were filed against the driver. The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks, and the investigation continues.

The Wantagh Senior Center is operated by the Town of Hempstead. Supervisor Kate Murray said both the pedestrian and the driver were members. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim," Murray said. "We’ll be working to assist those affected by this tragedy.”
