Seaford Avenue School development continues

The Seaford Board of Education last week authorized its president, Bruce Kahn, to execute any additional applications and related documents needed in connection with the approval process for a proposed condominium development at the Seaford Avenue School. This resolution was passed unanimously at the board’s work session on July 24.

An application for the “consideration of a major subdivision — final map” must now go before the Nassau County Planning Commission before the sale of the school is finalized. At an earlier meeting, on July 10, the school board had removed the first obstacle to the sale by agreeing to a Town of Hempstead change of zoning from Residence B to Golden Age (62 or older) for the site.

BK at Seaford is proposing to build 112 condominiums on the 5.67 acre parcel, to be called the Seasons at Seaford, for residents meeting the age minimum. The two-bedroom, two-bath units will be sold at market rates, and must be occupied by their owners. No rentals or leases will be allowed.

Attorney Albert A D’Agostino will represent both the school district and the developer before the planning commission. No further variances are required by the commission, and once the application is approved, the sale can move forward. If any changes are made to the property in the future, however, they will require the consent of the school district.

Although the sale of the property to BK at Seaford will bring $5.12 million to the school district, some residents remain opposed to it, citing quality-of-life issues including traffic, parking and lack of open space and parks in the area.
