Seaford seeks breakfast program exemption

Posted

The Seaford School District has conducted a survey among the parents to determine the need for a state-required breakfast program.

The New York State Education Department is requiring school districts to provide a breakfast program in September for all students in grades 1-6, unless the district can document a lack of need for such a program. The students would be required to pay for the breakfast, but it is partially aided by the state.

Based on the response received from the parents, the Seaford School District will be requesting a waiver from the state to exempt Seaford from the breakfast program. According to the state requirements, the district must receive at least a 33 percent response from the parents in order to be valid. In Seaford, 44 percent of parents replied to the survey and of that total, 86 percent indicated they would decline the program if it were offered.

Based on these results, Seaford School District officials believe participation in this program would be extremely low and will be requesting a waiver from the state.

Any resident wishing to express their concerns or opinions regarding the school district’s decision to waive participation in this program is welcomed to do so at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Seaford Manor School, 1590 Washington Ave.
