The doors opened at Seaford’s four schools on Sept. 3, and 2,338 students walked through, as the 2014-15 school year began with high hopes.

Outside the Seaford Harbor School, parents gathered on the front walk with their children, many holding boxes or plastic bags full of fresh supplies. Principal Donna Troisi came out to mingle with families and welcome students back.

“My favorite part is seeing their faces, their happy faces,” she said. “Hopefully we can keep the excitement going all year.”

Anthony Paradiso waited with his two children, Anthony, a second grader, and Gianna, who was starting her first day of kindergarten. Paradiso said she was excited to follow in the footsteps of her big brother. “She has the same teacher that he had,” he said.

Both came to school with new backpacks. Anthony’s had a Lego theme, while Gianna’s was from the popular children’s movie “Frozen.”

Lisa Albanese sent her daughter, Elle, off to kindergarten. “She’s a little scared,” she said. “She’ll do well, though.”

Elle came to school with a pink lunch bag with a big “E” on it, and was excited to make new friends and learn how to read. She will also have her big sister, Ava, a fifth-grader, to look out for her.

Monica Cannella’s children took the bus to school, but she still came to watch them get off, especially with her youngest daughter, Madeline, entering kindergarten. Cannella said Madeline has been watching her two older brothers get on the bus for the past three years, and couldn’t wait to start riding herself.

“She was totally ready,” Cannella said. “She was very excited.”

School began at 9 a.m. at both elementary schools. In many rooms, students unpacked supplies like in Bianca Kaplan’s fifth-grade class at Seaford Manor School. Her students had to bring in two binders, which they will use to keep all their notes organized for English language arts.
