Crossing cultures, math medals and senior time

Posted

Lawrence High School celebrated its annual Multicultural Week April 9-13. Throughout the week, flags from various countries were hung in the main lobby for students to admire and trace their ancestry. A map was also displayed that depicted different continents and countries of the world, offering Lawrence students the opportunity to pinpoint their roots with a push pin.

Each day, during announcements, music in a different language such as Spanish and Italian was played and enjoyed by the students, who dressed up in traditional attire from their country on one day. Senior Amanda Romero wore a traditional dress from her countries — Guatemala and El Salvador — while junior Syed Bukhari wore a traditional dress called a shalwar kameez from her country — Pakistan.  Different dance classes were offered to students that showcased Latin American cultures.

The National Honor Society held a CultureFest event in which international cuisines, donated by parents, students and teachers, were served one afternoon after school. These diverse foods were a huge success among the students, with many wondering why they’d never tried out these delicious foods before. All proceeds from the sale will go to charity.

Multicultural Week proved to be a wonderful opportunity for Lawrence High not only to celebrate the rich diversity of its student body but also to take pride in its traditions. The event also helped them connect to the rich cultures and heritages that are part of their identities.

Math invite
Several Lawrence High students received an invitation to participate in the final round of the 2018 Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair held at Hofstra University on April 20. They attended the fair under the guidance and supervision of Math and Science Chairman William Moss.
The participants worked hard researching their projects for months, developed their own ideas on different topics that incorporated Advanced Placement statistics, differential equations in calculus and a mix of statistics and AP psychology.

The students presented their topics orally before a panel of judges. The event proved  not only to be a learning experience for the participants but also a successful one, as Daniela Andrade, Stacy Portillo and Fiza Khader brought home bronze medals and junior John Chen won a silver medal. The achievements and mathematical talents of its students makes everyone proud at Lawrence.

Senior time
With the end of the school year coming fast for us seniors, the announcement that for the class of 2018, Safa Ilyas is the valedictorian, Daniel Rizzo is the salutatorian and Nicholas Williams is the honorary speaker, was met with great joy by all.

The students’ accomplishments and achievements over the years have been a constant source of pride for everyone who knows them, and fellow students, teachers and friends wishes them much success in their future endeavors.

We seniors look forward to spending time together, as classmates, on many happy occasions in the coming weeks, including the senior trip, senior banquet and graduation.
