Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, of Wantagh, participated in programs locally and beyond that were designed to celebrate Women’s History Month.

Sweeney appeared on “Good Day Street Talk,” a New York City-based television show produced by WNYW, on March 8. The councilwoman, who serves portions of both Wantagh and Seaford, her hometown, also took part in local programs and events that honored women for their contributions to their communities.

On the television show, Fox 5 reporter Antwan Lewis interviewed Sweeney and New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson, asking them about their experiences as women in politics. Both officials delved into the importance of Women’s History Month and discussed equal pay and the ways in which woman have shaped society.

Sweeney has also been rallying around the Wantagh-Seaford area, promoting Women’s History Month across both communities. The councilwoman attended the Women of Wantagh celebration, coordinated by the Miss Wantagh Court, on March 27.

"Every year, the Miss Wantagh pageant showcases the very best that the Wantagh community has to offer,” Sweeney said. “These young ladies are beautiful inside and out, volunteering in their communities and helping to make a difference. If there ever was a perfect model citizen, these ladies epitomize it.”

Sweeney also put together a Women’s History Month public service announcement — with the help of the Nassau County Girl Scouts — which she promoted through social media throughout the month.

In the announcement, published on www.facebook.com/ErinKingSweeney, the councilwoman explained the “Learn it, Teach It, Share It!” campaign. Local families were encouraged to pick a different, historically significant woman in history everyday in March and discuss the ways in which she reshaped America. Sweeney also noted that 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage in New York.

Sweeney was appointed to a town council seat for the 5th District, replacing the retired Angie Cullin, in 2015. She won election in November of that year as well, and continues to serve sections of Wantagh, Seaford, Baldwin, Freeport, Bellmore, Merrick, Point Lookout and Lido Beach.
