Mandalay Elementary School students in Wantagh celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 8 by reading books by the author, wearing crazy hats and participating in activities at Seuss-themed classroom stations.

Teacher Kristin Rogate’s students designed socks after reading “Fox in Socks” and then matched different Seuss characters to clues in a Write a Room activity, according to a district news release. They also measured Seuss characters on paper using cubes. They sorted “op” words by placing the real words and nonsense words in separate columns on the SmartBoard with Rogate’s help.

Teacher Cheryl Schwartz’s kindergarten students also designed socks and used “op” words from “Hop on Pop” to make popcorn. The students also participated in rhyming activities to decipher real words from nonsense words and created words containing “op” while working alongside Schwartz.
