Update: The Wantagh School District released the following statement from Superintendent John McNamara saying the police do not believe the graffiti is gang related:

"Our district regularly works with NCPD and the Town of Hempstead to address graffiti and any other act of vandalism around all of our district schools. NCPD has informed us that graffiti discovered on a guardrail on Beltagh Avenue in front of Wantagh Middle School is not gang related."

The symbols were discovered spray-painted on a guardrail outside Wantagh Middle School Wednesday at about 7:15am, Nassau police reported, adding that they are investigating the incident.

The Department said the graffiti spelled out “MS13” in red spray paint. The police are trying to determine whether the property belongs to the school district or the town of Hempstead.

The graffiti was discovered outside the Middle School, along Beltagh Ave, September 5, according to the police report. It was the second day of school.
