Five Towns receives a light snow

Snow started falling across Nassau County around 10 a.m. on Saturday, and by noon an inch to two inches had already accumulated.

The National Weather Service was predicting three to five inches of the white stuff, with potentially higher totals on the North Shore.

The NWS said to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions, particularly because wet leaves combined with snow could make for slippery roads.

The NWS recommended that drivers lower speeds and be prepared for reduced visibility during the storm.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for parts of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York, including all of the Island, through Sunday morning.

Village of Cedarhurst officials are asking residents to make sure their vehicles are parked in their driveways, as village work crews are planning to plow

"shortly after the snow begins to accumulate."

Cars that are parked on the roadway prevent plows and salt spreaders from doing a really effective job, they added. Officials said that the plows will do the best job when they do not have to dodge parked cars.

Having clear streets is essential to maintain safe and efficient passage for police, ambulances, emergency vehicles and fire engines. Avoid all unnecessary, If there is an emergency call 911.

Officials also said that when shoveling driveways, toss the snow to the right side of the driveway (when facing out toward the street). This will minimize the chance of having the snow pushed back into the driveway when the plow goes past a house.
