As a native Baldwinite, Joseph Scannell was inseparable from the community he grew up in, attending its schools, becoming involved in scouting and representing the Town of Hempstead hamlet as a Nassau County legislator. Scannell died of Huntington’s disease on May 13. He was 59.

Republicans in the Nassau County Legislature modified their proposed redistricting map yesterday, backing off a plan to place a sliver of Merrick, including the home of Democratic Legislator Dave Denenberg, into the neighboring district of Legislator Joseph Scannell, a Democrat from Baldwin. The plan would have removed one of the two incumbents from the Legislature.

With 94 percent of the vote counted as of early Wednesday morning, six-term incumbent Democrat Joe Scannell won a close contest in Nassau County’s 5th Legislative District, which encompasses Rockville Centre, South Hempstead, Baldwin and Freeport. In unofficial results, with 62 of 68 precincts reporting, Scannell had garnered 5,611 votes — 53 percent — compared with Republican challenger Chris Browne’s count of 4,916 — 47 percent.

The third race between attorneys Chris Browne, a Republican from Rockville Centre who is challenging incumbent, seven-time county legislator Joe Scannell, a Democrat from Baldwin, took a provocative turn this week when the Nassau County Democratic Club sent out a mailing asserting that in June 2010, Browne, in his role on the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals, voted to approve construction of a strip club in Wantagh.
