A super time to see the supermoon

Posted

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie … it could be because it’s what’s called a supermoon. That’s what happened Saturday night, when the moon neared its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, the first of three consecutive supermoons for 2015.

The Baldwin Civic Association marked the supermoon by hosting a moon-watching and star-gazing event at the Community Garden behind the Historical Museum. The event closed out the civic association’s summer-long concert series.

On Saturday, the moon actually reached its fullest point at 2:35 p.m., but that didn’t stop star-gazers from bringing their telescopes and other equipment to the garden in the evening.

The full moon of August, known as the Sturgeon Moon, is the last full moon of summer. The Harvest Moon, which heralds the arrival of fall, comes Sept. 27. Another supermoon is expected on Oct. 27.
