South Shore Symphony Orchestra
Hear the South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Scott Jackson Wiley, when the orchestra presents the world premiere of Steve Barta’s orchestral arrangement of Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. Bolling created a furor with his seven-part musical suite in the mid ‘70s. Its ingenious fusion of baroque stylings with the jazz idiom was an instant classic and remained in the Billboard Top 40 for 10 years. The great jazz flutist Hubert Laws collaborates with the area’s favorite pianist, Lynbrook’s Jeffrey Biegel, in Barta’s masterful re-arrangement of Bolling’s acclaimed composition. The program also includes the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofé and Laws’ skillful reworking of the last movement of Rachmaninoff’s beloved Piano Concerto N. 2.

Celebrating Dance
Hofstra’s Dance Program unveils some new works at this weekend’s annual fall dance concert. Guest choreographer Bill Young, co-founder of Bill Young/Colleen Thomas & Co. (a company noted for its impact across cultural boundaries), has composed a new work, “This is not ____ ,” created with (and especially for) 12 Hofstra junior dance majors that will be premiere at this dance concert. The remainder of the junior class will perform “Un Acadien Errant (The Wandering Acadian),” choreographed by new faculty member Livia Vanaver — inspired by the tragedy of the Acadian expulsion that occurred in Canada in 1775. The dance students will also perform other new pieces by Hofstra faculty choreographers Dyane Harvey-Salaam, Rachel List, Amy Marshall, Livia Vanaver, and Karla Wolfangle.
Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19-20, 8 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 21, 2 and 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 22, 2 p.m. $12, $10 seniors and students. Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus, Hempstead. (516) 463-6644 or www.hofstratickets.com.
