With reports that height of the coming storm should arrive Monday and Tuesday, Baldwin schools will be closed on those days. Three messages from the school district went out to residents of Baldwin on Sunday, the first said that the district was monitoring the storm, the second announced the Monday closing, and the third adding Tuesday to the list.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to wreak havoc across Long Island's South Shore on Monday into Tuesday. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has signed an executive order mandating evacuation of low-lying areas south of Sunrise Highway.

By 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, 50-pound sandbags and generators were sold out at the Freeport Home Depot as residents hurried to prepare for Hurricane Sandy, which was predicted to make landfall in New Jersey Monday into Tuesday, causing widespread flooding, heavy winds and potentially power outages throughout the New York metropolitan area. As of Sunday afternoon, Sandy remained a Category 1 hurricane and was barreling up the Eastern Seaboard, with its center grazing the coast between South Carolina and North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service, Sandy’s impacts were expected to build across Long Island on Sunday, with gradually increasing winds and a 70 percent chance of rain. The storm’s greatest impacts will be felt in the area from Monday afternoon into Monday night, according to the service. Wind gusts could reach 75 to 80 miles per hour. The storm was predicted to weaken Tuesday into Wednesday.
