Back in 2010, the year when both Music Gallery and Mr. Music closed their doors, Yaakov “Michael” Dworetsky saw the need for a new music store in the area. As a musician with extensive resources in the industry, he opened Music Hub, debuting on the Sunday of the Cedarhurst Sidewalk Sale. He started with eight guitars, three music teachers, and 15 students.

True to its name, Music Hub is virtually a clearing house for all facets of music. On the retail end, it offers every instrument, from bagpipes to harps. The most popular, of course, are guitars, bass, pianos and drums. Dworetsky can usually match the online price. Among his many brands are Fender, Yamaha, Dean and Elixir. If a customer wants something he doesn’t have, he will either order it or help find it elsewhere.

As a music school, Music Hub offers lessons for children and adults on just about any instrument. Dworetsky chooses from about 45 teachers to fit the needs of the student. One-on-one lessons can take place at the store, in the student’s home, or sometimes at the teacher’s home. Dworetsky, who often consults with schools and occupational therapists, offers “Music Exploratory” for children up to first grade, usually with a piano or drums, which can help improve a young child’s motor skills and build up muscles.

The Music Hub also does repairs. On staff is an excellent piano tuner who can actually build a piano from scratch. Music Hub will re-string guitars, solder, fix amplifiers, and much more.

Another service is musicians-for-hire. From a DJ to a 25-piece orchestra, Music Hub can provide entertainment for weddings, bar or bat mitzvahs, or other occasions.

Dworetsky started playing piano at age three, has been playing guitar for 15 years, and played in New York’s Greenwich Village at age 19. Working as a roadie for the renowned Israeli guitarist, Yossi Piamenta, he would drive him to gigs, set up, and clean up equipment. Through all this, he developed the connections and resources needed to operate a successful music environment.

“Most importantly,” said Dworetsky, “students should enjoy themselves while they learn.” Last year he booked over 100 students, from age five to older adults. “It’s never too late to learn to play an instrument.”

Retail hours at Music Hub are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Friday and Saturday.
