The East Meadow Fire Department will hold its 14th annual Sept. 11 candlelight vigil on Friday evening, one day after Nassau County holds its own ceremony.

The county’s Sunset Candlelight and Remembrance Ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, rain or shine, at the 9/11 memorial in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, near Parking Field 6.

The ceremony, county officials said, will include the reading of names of Nassau County residents who lost their lives in the attacks and will be read by family members. The memorial features two semi-transparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, rising 30 feet from a fountain, and also contains two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

The East Meadow Fire Department will host its ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at Veterans Memorial Park, at the intersection of Prospect and East Meadow avenues. The EMFD requests attendees to arrive at 6:45 p.m.

As of last year, the park is home to an 1,800-pound marble statue, a steel beam from the World Trade Center and a commemorative footstone listing the names of East Meadow residents who died on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial was installed by the East Meadow Kiwanis Club.
