A North Massapequa woman stole thousands of dollars from an older Bellmore woman by forging checks, according to police.

Maureen Adamo, 52, was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Bethpage. Nassau County Police Department officials were searching for her because they believed she had taken $50,000 from a 73-year-old Bellmorite who once called her a friend, authorities said.

According to detectives, the unnamed victim had asked Adamo to help her while she was recovering from a medical procedure by making sure her bills were paid. Adamo allegedly forged checks from the victim’s account and deposited them in her own in January.

Brendan Brosh, a spokesman with Nassau County district attorney’s office, said Adamo was charged with second-degree grand larceny and four counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. She was arraigned last Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Adamo is represented by an attorney from the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, which does not comment on cases.
