Here we snow again

Tuesday remained somewhat dry, but the National Weather Service predicted new snowfall overnight into Wednesday for Baldwin. And that sound you hear may be thunder.

While there was a slight chance of light snowfall during the day, the weather service forecast 2 to 4 inches of snow beginning after 10 p.m. Tuesday. Snow totals were dependent on where snow bands set up, the weather service said. It said some areas may only see an inch of snow. The snow was to taper off by about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

But before that happpens, the low will drop to 30, with an east wind of 3 to 7 mph. And the forecast calls for the possibility of thunder.

Thundersnow can happen when lightning occurs during a snowstorm, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, which is run by the government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "Thundersnow can be found where there is relatively strong instability and abundant moisture above the surface, such as above a warm front," the lab said on its website.

A winter weather advisory was to start at midnight and expire at noon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the weather service was keeping a weather eye on coastal impacts from the weather. A coastal flood warning was to expire at midnight, while a second one was to run from 7 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

For Wednesday, the weather service predicted that snow would be likely, possibly mixing with rain after 9 a.m., then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy were forecast, with a high near 40 and wind chill values between 25 and 30. A north wind of 10 to 17 mph was forecast to become west in the afternoon.
