The much-anticipated rematch between Lawrence and Sayville for the Long Island Class III football championship is set after both teams cruised to their respective county titles.

The Golden Tornadoes scored six touchdowns and racked up 426 yards in the first half en route to defending their Nassau Conference III crown last Friday afternoon with a convincing 54-21 victory over Plainedge at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. Senior running back Tyler Fredericks rushed for 262 yards and four touchdowns on only 10 carries, and junior quarterback Joe Capobianco was 8-for-8 passing for 186 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score as the offense topped the 50-point plateau for the eighth time this season and fourth time in the past five games.

“It’s exciting,” said Fredericks, whose 65-yard run opened the scoring four plays after senior Raquan Grandy recovered a fumble at the Lawrence 5 to halt a Plainedge threat on the game’s first possession. “All year we’ve been looking forward to these last two games,” Fredericks added. “We’ve got one down, one to go.”

Lawrence (11-0) will face Sayville (11-0) this Friday at 7 p.m. at Hofstra. The Golden Flashes, who won last year’s record-setting LIC, 78-64, captured their third straight Suffolk Division III crown, beating Westhampton last Sunday at Stony Brook, 36-7.
