Long Island rebuilding in Sandy's wake
To get involved with the Red Cross, you can call its offices in Mineola at (516) 747-3500. To volunteer, you must be over age 16, able to lift and carry 50 pounds and comfortable working with people in stressful situations. Or, to make a $10 donation, text the word REDCROSS to 90999. Kutner said there were volunteers from as far away as Mexico working on Long Island. “When there’s a disaster like this, you see how beautiful the volunteers are in their efforts,” he said. On Tuesday, Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger-relief organization, began supplying the American Red Cross with 7,000 pounds of nonperishable food destined for emergency storm shelters in Nassau County, including baby formula, juice, water and other shelf-stable products. Island Harvest is seeking donations of funds and nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, rice, pasta, shelf-stable juice and baby formula. Personal care items are also needed. For more information on how to contribute, call Island Harvest at (516) 294-8528 or visit www.islandharvest.org. Alex Costello, Brian Croce, Ann Friedman and David Weingrad contributed to this story.
