Lynbrook’s final drive of the regular season brought the Owls to their desired destination — the Nassau Conference III playoffs — for a seventh consecutive year.

A fake punt on fourth down, an 11-yard run on third-and-eight, and quarterback Danny Kelly’s 42 rushing yards set up Pedro Martinez’s game-winning 28-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining that gave the Owls a thrilling 17-14 victory over Plainedge last Saturday afternoon at Marion Street School.

Martinez split the uprights after a perfect snap by Greg Karaczynski and perfect hold by Paul Felix. It was the third win in four weeks for Lynbrook (4-4), which leapfrogged three teams — Floral Park, South Side and Hewlett — to earn the No. 6 seed and a trip to Plainedge for a first-round playoff game.

“Our motto all year has been ‘We Will’,” Owls head coach Steve LoCicero said. “Today, we did.”

Kelly ran for 153 yards and one touchdown on 39 carries, and added 137 yards and a score through the air. Nick LoCicero had 75 yards receiving, while Austin Bilello (11 tackles), Kevin Estrada (2.5 sacks) and Bryce Coleman (four tackles, one interception) led the defense.

“It’s very exciting,” coach LoCicero said. “We’re playing our best football at the right time.”
