Men cook, everyone eats

Posted

About 80 guests enjoyed a meal and a show on April 18 at the Wantagh Kiwanis Club’s annual Men Who Cook fundraiser at Temple B’Nai Torah. The event raised about $3,000, which will go toward various charitable initiatives.

There were 15 cooks who prepared a variety of dishes. Kiwanis Club President Heidi Felix said there were 30 food stations. Items varied from the chicken, sausage and peppers sent in by County Legislator Steve Rhoads, to the chicken cordon blue prepared by Bob Hulka, to the pulled pork sliders made by past Kiwanis president Ken Klein.

There were also numerous pasta dishes, chili, wings, as well as soups and desserts. Floyd Earl made clam chowder, and Alex Kushnir provided a carrot soufflé.

Guests filled up. “They came hungry. They didn’t leave hungry,” Felix said. “There was really not a lot of leftovers.” What was extra was donated to the Mary Brennan soup kitchen in Hempstead.

The Wantagh-based Eastline Theatre performed scenes from “Love Letters” with actors Thea Sieban and Pat Reilly providing entertainment for an hour and 15 minutes.

There were also numerous raffle baskets, featuring items such as Mary Kay cosmetics, wine and iHome electronics.

Proceeds from the event will be used to send children to Kamp Kiwanis, an upstate summer camp, and for scholarships for graduating high school seniors at Wantagh High School and the Rosemary Kennedy BOCES Center.
