Newsweek magazine, in its recently published “America’s Best High Schools” list, ranked Oceanside High School in the top 500, saying it is one of the schools that “do the absolute best jobs of preparing students for college.”

Oceanside ranked 328th, which would place it in the top one percent among the nation’s 19,400 high schools, with a College Readiness Score of 78.55. The rankings were based on six components: enrollment rate (25 percent), graduation rate (20 percent), weighted AP/IB composite scores (17.5 percent), weighted SAT/ACT composite scores (17.5 percent), holding power, which indicates a change in student enrollment between ninth and twelfth grades (10 percent) and counselor-to-student ratio (10 percent).

The No. 1 school in the nation, according to Newsweek, is Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, with a College Readiness Score of 99.93.

There were 54 New York school in the top 500. In addition to Oceanside, Nassau County schools East Meadow (233) and South Side in Rockville Centre (390) made the list. The state’s top high school was the Staten Island Technical High School, which came in at No. 6 on the list with a College Readiness Score of 99.61.

“We’re very excited to be included on such an elite list,” said Oceanside’s superintendent of schools, Dr. Phyllis Harrington. “At the same time, we are sure to use multiple measures to evaluate the comprehensive education our students are receiving. We also like to look at things that are not measured in Newsweek’s formula, like the number of students enrolled in fine performance arts and extracurricular activities. We’ll continue to work towards making our students college and career ready.”
