Oceanside man severely burned in backyard explosion

An Oceanside man was seriously burned after an explosion in the backyard of 272 Bayside Avenue.

The explosion happened on April 28 at 11:40 a.m. while the man, 64, was using his backyard brick barbecue. The explosion left second and third degree burns on half of his body.

Both the Oceanside Fire Department and the Nassau County Fire Marshal came to the scene. An ambulance took the man to Nassau University Medical Center's burn center, according to fire department spokesman Ed Scharfberg. He is currently in critical condition.

The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the explosion.
