Pre-k program ready for second year

After a sudden start, Island Park’s pre-kindergarten program is ready for its second year. The program was launched last September when the district received a $600,000 grant from the New York State Education Department. The district had little over a month to set up and implement the program after it received the grant back in August. Island Park will receive this grant every year for five years, although the Education Department must review the program in person. This review should happen after the school’s spring break. “I feel really proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Superintendent Rosmarie Bovino. “I think the state will also see that.”

As of March 26, 50 children are signed up for next year’s class. The program must have between 60 and 72 children. Registration days are May 12, 13 and 14. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Children who turn four years old on or before Dec. 1 are eligible.

Bovino said the district was hoping into to raise funds for a pre-K playground. The classrooms have had “smart tables,” or tables with large interactive tablets, installed.

The grant was part of the state’s $340 million push for full-day pre-K last year. There were 81 schools and community organizations that received grants.
