Resident honored for years of service

Valley Stream resident Sharon Daly was recognized last month by Assemblyman Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook) at his annual Women of Distinction event for decades of volunteerism in the community.

“The selflessness Sharon has shown Valley Stream is an uplifting example of devotion to our area and residents,” Curran said.

Daly’s family has roots in the village dating back to the 1920’s, and she is a lifelong resident. She is an administrative officer for the Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department. Her daughter, Arline, is an elementary school teacher in New York City.

Daly has volunteered with the Valley Stream Green Hornets Youth Football Organization for almost 30 years, and served as president for five terms. She now sits on its executive board, runs its cheerleading program and supervises the organization’s concession stand at Firemen’s Field.

She is also president of the Valley Stream Central High School Alumni Association, which has more than 4,500 members, and editor of the group’s bi-annual publication that gets distributed to alumni nationwide.

Daly is also active at the Holy Name of Mary Parish in Valley Stream, serving for the past nine years as a Vincentian for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul through the parish outreach program.

“I was so honored to be among the other recipients,” Daly said. “But honestly, I never do anything to gain public recognition. I just really enjoy what I do. I have been so blessed over the years to be surrounded by my supportive family and some truly amazing people, so anything I have accomplished through my volunteering, was never done by acting alone. I have a great bunch of friends who also volunteer their time and talents, and together, working as a team, whatever it takes, we get the job done — and the best part is we make it fun.”
