Calling themselves “The War Writers,” Liam Coll, Christian Piedrahita and Matthew Krautheimer of School No. 4 have written The Book of WWII, a fictional tale of three friends who go off to war to save America only to realize they’re not ready for combat.

The youngsters who are in grade five started the book last year and dedicated it to their teacher, Mrs. McGrath, teacher assistant Mrs. O’Connor and their classmates.

Coll describes the work as historical fiction. The idea grew from playing army with his brother. He shared his idea with friends Christian and Matthew and they were interested in working together.

The main characters are Jeff, who is tough and courageous, George, an idealist who always dreamed of saving America, and Luke, quiet and kind who speaks only when he has something good to say, according to the boys’ descriptions.

In addition, their commanding officer is Jake, is a tough and respected general.

The boys are avid readers, especially of WWII history. In addition, Piedrahita’s cousin is a marine currently serving in the middle east.

The boys are now working on a sequel.
