Seaford’s fifth annual Relay for Life took place on June 11 at Seaford High School. The event raised more than $29,000 for the American Cancer Society. About 200 people attended, with 117 participating in the walk on 24 different teams.

“The community really brought together a great event,” said Julia Biggiani, a representative at the American Cancer Society.

She, co-chairwoman of the event Denise Goban, and cancer survivor Terry Gough spoke to kick-off the program. They then led a survivor’s lap around the track. Lap bands were sold for donations to encourage walkers. Tents were also set up by community members to raise money. According to Biggiani, people walked the track the entire event — with the exception of the brief rainstorm midway through the day. Still, people stayed and waited out the rain.

“That people stuck around really stands to show that Seaford wanted to be at this event and fight for this cause,” Biggiani said.

After the rain passed, the luminaria and closing ceremonies took place. Overall, she said it was a great day that brought the community together against a sad disease that has affected so many people so deeply.
