Shore Road students live up to the challenge

Teachers at Bellmore’s Shore Road School challenged sixth-graders with an important task before they moved on to Grand Avenue Middle School: help those in need across Long Island.

Students in Stacey Reiner, Laurie DiMaina and Graceann McClenahan’s classes participated in “The INN Challenge” this spring. They were asked to collect various items for the Interfaith Nutrition Network, a Long Island nonprofit hunger-relief organization.

Reiner explained that all the students in each class worked in teams, earning points for new and gently clothing, toiletry items, canned goods, package diapers and coffee or tea bags. Instead of competing against other teams, each group had to surpass a particular point value to beat the challenge.

“Not only did every child participate, but each team significantly surpassed the points they needed,” Reiner said. “We are so proud of their efforts.”
