South Merrick gets a clean sweep by civic association

Children, parents and local government officials dedicated a few Sunday hours to the South Merrick Community Civic Association’s annual Spring Clean Sweep on May 15.

The crowd gathered at Camman’s Pond, at Merrick Road and Lindenmere Drive. The group collected several bags of litter and pulled out weeds to help clean up the community.

“This event emphasizes the importance of Earth Day, which was celebrated on April 22,” said Joe Baker, the SMCCA president. The civic group provided participants with tools and equipment to help clean up the grounds.

Among the participants were members of Merrick Girl Scout Troop 2200, who helped plant flowers at the north and south ends of the park. “The scouts were very helpful with successfully gathering several bags of trash and weeds,” Baker said.

Although the event was originally scheduled for May 1, inclement weather forced Baker to move the date to May 15. He said participation levels exceeded his expectations, and children and families were more than willing to help clean up Merrick.

Baker also announced future cleanup plans. “In the coming weeks, other targeted areas will include Julian Lane Park, the Merrick Road post office and the triangular garden at Merrick and Clubhouse roads,” he said.
