Stadium lights and a new pavilion for Malverne H.S.

Some exciting new projects are underway at the football field behind Malverne High School.

Four light towers are being built that will provide stadium lighting for night events — from sports to entertainment — and are expected to be ready for use by next month.

The four towers, which contain LED lights that are expected to last 100,000 hours, are being installed by Musco Sports Lighting, which has installed 90 percent of the stadium lighting in the country, according to Dr. Spiro C. Colaitis, the district’s assistant superintendent for operations.

There will be three light levels: high, for sports games; medium, for musical performances; and low, for after events have concluded and spectators are exiting the area.

Colaitis said the towers make use of the latest technology for minimizing light pollution to surrounding neighborhoods. “If you live in a house nearby, you won’t get lights in your living room,” he said.

The lights will cost $600,000, and the funding was approved by district residents in last year’s budget vote.

Also under construction are a new “picnic pavilion” on the west side of the football stadium and three flagpoles, which the district is calling Flag Plaza. The pavilion and flagpoles were funded by a $94,000 grant spearheaded by County Legislator Siela Bynoe.
